Google (NYSE: GOOG) confirmed rumors today in an announcement that the company is planning to provide a free cell phone software package and will work with others to create an open platform for developers to build cell phone applications. Consumers will need to buy a new phone, but calls and internet will be free at the cost of exposure to advertisements. Customers will be able to choose from phones made by four different cell phone manufactures. ![]()
There is no doubt that this will change the cell phone market. To compete, cell phone companies will need to increase our choices, prices will need to be more compatible, and we can only hope that someone will consider offering better customer service.
