Recently a big buzz started about all the ITIL hype. A study by BT INS raised some critical questions about whether or not ITIL practices are really living up to the promises of OCG. Questions were raised and one blogger even suggested conducting a scientific trial "ITIL versus a placebo." Although the blogger's full post goes a little too far, his point remains valid.
The study by BT INS included IT professionals around the globe. 51% were practicing ITIL, and of those, only 31 said ITIL is critical to the success of their goals. This is down compared to 45 percent and 43 percent in 2004 and 2006.
"Perhaps [ITIL] is starting to hit a saturation point, or maybe the recent introduction of ITILv3 will drive new adoption in the year ahead," the report says.
"Three years ago expectations for ITIL were higher than warranted," BT INS says. "The reality of what it can and can't do has lowered respondents' views of its criticality. "See the full story in NetWorkWorld.
This years survey also revealed that fewer respondents feel that they understand ITIL at both a conceptual and detail level. Well, perhaps the consolidated 8 volume set is still a bit much. (Just a few years ago, there were over 30 volumes.) These are going to be consolidated even more to only 5 books. (I'll let you know if someone publishes some cliff notes on that.)
