I work closely with a company whose is currently in the planning phase of outsourcing their IT department. This particular company has been around for nearly 100 years, and many employees have worked there over 20 years. This is all about to change in the IT department this year.
More and more companies are "selling" or outsourcing their IT positions to the lowest bidder. The new trend in big business is to outsource everything except the core of the business, so that the company can focus on what they do best, and attempt to drive down the cost of those things that are not helping you increase profit. If you are in IT, and you do not work for a technology company, this story may be about you! I will not be naming names here, but employees working at the company know that the outsource company likely to get the bid is famous for pay cuts. As a matter of fact, I used to interview help desk techs leaving this "outsourcing" company. When I asked them why they wanted to leave a Fortune 500 company, "pay cuts" was always the reason. This company was giving pay cuts before it became popular.
Sadly, some of the most knowledgeable IT staff are bailing, leaving behind the insecure who lack the confidence to market their skills in the job market. Most of "insecure" folks find the task of writing a resume daunting. Others fear they are above the age of the competition. They have devoted most of their careers to this company. The company who is trying to cut back on their cost by outsourcing is loosing their best staff with the most marketable job skills. It is like when you have a garage sale. You put all your junk out on the lawn. People come along and buy up everything that is worth anything, and you end up with stuff that is barely worth giving to the Salvation Army. Here is another blogger whose answer to this problem is, If you can't beat the outsourcing movement, join it. Check it out. This is a very good look from the other side of the coin.
