In my experience, employees always appreciate food festivities. For many, events that include free food at the office mean more than gifts with the company logo, theme parties, and a lot of other well-meant, planned activities. A common problem I have encountered is high absenteeism at help desk call centers - particularly on Mondays. Since Mondays are usually the days with the highest call volume, it always prepares the way for a day of insanity for those of us dedicated enough to show up in spite of it. Since I don’t call in sick when I am well, I am usually suffering right along with everyone else.
Part of the problem may be due to sick time policies. When the lines between sick time and planned vacation time are not well defined, some people chose to use all their time off to extend their weekends. If your call center has the same issues, particularly on Mondays, why not try having Pizza Mondays? Pick random days, make sure people know that these special events only occur on Mondays, and these treats are never announced. Be sure to send an email out to the team right before lunch to announce that it is Pizza Monday. When the chronic absentees return on Tuesday they will read the email and see why it is not so bad to show up on Mondays.
