When I came across this story, I was startled and excited. Not because I have heard anything great about AT&T as an employer, but because major companies don't usually make moves like this. The story I found was brief however, and I could not find any Press Releases or other stories to back it up. As a matter of fact I found this article that is dramatically different. It states that AT&T actually plans to send 900 more jobs overseas. Another article from late July brings to light that AT&T agreed to bring back 2,000 jobs in a negotiation settlement last year with Communication Workers of America. Now it all makes sense.
It just so happens that I had to call AT&T last week for tech support, and I thought I would share my experience with you. The person I was talking to was very polite, but he obviously did not understand english well, and I don't think he was trained to support blackberrys. Here is how the call went:
ME: Hello, I am having a problem with the software used to setup email on my blackberry. My home computer is a Mac, but the software is only made for PCs.
AT&T SUPPORT: Okay so you would like to setup your email on your home computer?
ME: No, I would like to setup email on my blackberry, and I need to install the software to set that up. The software is made for Microsoft computers, but I have a McIntosh.
AT&T SUPPORT: Okay, so you want to setup your AT&T email so you can receive it on your computer?
ME: No, I don't want to receive email on my computer at all. I know how to do that. I want to receive email on my blackberry phone, not my computer, but I have been told that I need to use the setup software to get email on my phone.
AT&T SUPPORT: Okay, so you need to setup your blackberry software on your computer?
ME: No, this is AT&T software. The blackberry software installs just fine.
AT&T SUPPORT: So you need to setup email on your computer?
ME: No...You know what? That's enough. Why don't you just...have a great day? Okay? Thank you anyway.
AT&T SUPPORT: Okay...
ME: Good bye.
