Interviewing for the Help Desk: Part 1

jobinterview.jpg

I just finished hiring a new help desk person for our team, and I thought I would share a few things I realized from interviewing.

  • Not everyone has the same feeling about on time as I do - Several of the potential interviews were late to an interview. Save yourself the trouble of being late and get to the interview site early. We're on the 26th floor. What happens if the elevator is broken, and you're there 5 minutes ahead of time? HINT: You'll be late. That's a bad impression.
  • Dress to impress - The young man in this picture obviously gets it. One of the young men I interviewed for our opening had a shirt so tight I thought he was going to jump out of it midway through the interview.
  • Be nice...TO EVERYONE! - If you're not nice to the recepionist, if you're not nice to the HR recruiter, you will NOT get to me. PERIOD. People who are rude to others they feel are beneath them will not fit in on a Help Desk filled with the professionals on my team.
  •  Demonstrate your troubleshooting abilities,  some way, some how - I'd like to see you can actually do what you say you can do. If you can't communicate it to me in an interview, how can you expect to communicate it to an end-user over the phone?
  • Figure out your "purple cow" - What's special about you, and only you? Is it your personality, your amazing ability to relate to customers, what is it? Show and tell me, and help me see it when we're interviewing together.
Do I expect a perfect interview? Nope. I just expect an honest effort, and some common courtesy, and a little bit of WOW!

I'll share more tips soon, as well as some tips for Help Desk managers on how to find GREAT candidates. Please share your tips in the comments below.
